GALAXY QUEST

By Grabthar’s hammer, what are savings?

Two species at war, Aliens that look like Minors but are actually Miners, the power to go into the past and…..The cast of a television show. What could possibly go wrong?

I ramble on about, of course, Galaxy Quest. A film made to parody Star Trek, but actually turned out to be better than most of the pre- J. J. Abrams movies. The plot is simple: The cast of a science fiction TV are mistaken by real aliens for the characters they played, who, in the aliens’ minds, are nothing short of legends. They are whisked into outer space via a…..unique….type of teleport, and are thrown into the war between the Thermians and Sarris, a green faced, spider leg-headed genocidal maniac.

The surprising thing about the plot is it’s surprisingly good. If it were made nowadays, there would be too much bad acting and crap jokes. But it doesn’t have either of these things. It’s done really well, both on the acting side and the writing side. An animatronics by the legendary Stan Winston (Terminator, Jurassic Park) help the story look and feel more real.

As anyone who has seen the movie will know, there is one thing that really makes this movie shine. The non-stop laughter. And that’s an understatement. From start to finish Galaxy Quest will have you laughing your head off. And if it doesn’t, you shouldn’t be let outside until it does. Even having watched it countless times, I now find myself laughing in anticipation of the really funny stuff. Like the girly screams of Sam Rockwell’s ‘Guy’, the laid back attitude of Tony Shalhoub’s ‘Fred’, or the ever brilliant Alan Rickman’s ‘Alexander’. Whilst the entire cast is nothing short of perfect for the film, it’s definitely these three that make it even better. It, and I shit you not here, is the only movie I have ever watched that has me laughing from the very beginning to the very end.

Speaking of the rest of the cast, it’s probably the most star studded film other than any of the Marvel movies. For the crew, we have Tim Allen, playing a fairly well written version of what William Shatner was really like, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub and Daryl Mitchell. For the Thermians, we have the absolutely brilliant Enrico Colantoni as Mathesar, even Rainn Wilson is in there somewhere.

What really gets me though, is that most people nowadays haven’t even heard of this film. It’s like when people say they haven’t seen Star Wars, just slightly less heart breaking. I mean, yes, it’s not a new film. But 1999 wasn’t that long ago. I mean, come on, get your act together.

Ok then, to sum up: Great plot, incredible cast, and, I can’t stress this enough, unending laughs. Oh, and a rock monster…….And an undignified departure from a space-dock. Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech.

So, if you haven’t seen the film, what are you waiting for?! And, if you have, go on, indulged yourself and watch it again. As Fred says, “That was a hell of a thing.”

8/10
