RANKING THE ASSASSIN'S CREED GAMES: WORST TO BEST

I’m going to start off by saying this wasn’t an easy list to make. Even after laying out all the games on the floor and moving them around a hundred times, I’m still not sure. I’m a huge fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, despite some faults in recent years. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are high and low points in every game. I can accept that. That’s why I’m doing this. Let’s get started…

Assassin’s Creed: Rogue (2014)

"I am a Templar of the Colonial...Of the American rite."

Let’s face it, this was always going to take last place. For starters, it was the only game in the series that I genuinely didn’t enjoy playing. It is, for all intents and purposes, a heavily watered down version of AC4, but with the plot of Revenge of the Sith. The gameplay, story and graphics were all massively disappointing, and it’s only real saviour is the ending, which ties into AC: Unity.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag (2013)

"Everything is permitted? I like the sound of that."

From this point on, the games aren’t necessarily bad, they just get better as they go on. I’m on the fence about Black Flag. As a game, it’s great. The naval gameplay is some of the best in the series, and the game looks great on screen. It shows the life of a pirate in really exciting ways. It’s main let down is the story. The Assassins play a very, very little role in the game overall, and that shows. Still huge fun to play though.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity (2014)

"All that we do, all that we are, begins and ends with oursleves."

The series’ first attempt at a next-gen title wasn’t the success everyone was hoping for. While Revolutionary France makes a great setting and the graphics look amazing, Unity’s story, like Black Flag’s, is its downfall. It’s confusing, drawn out, and isn’t really that gripping. It’s other downfall was co-op. That was the bigger disappointment. It wasn’t what players thought it would be, and very rarely worked. Plus there was that whole faceless character issue on the PC version.

Assassin’s Creed: 3 (2012)

"In the name of liberty, I will fight the enemy regardless of their alligence."

This game is the one I had most trouble placing on the list. It marked the end of Desmond’s saga, whilst telling the story of the American Revolution and Native-American Connor. A lot of people, including me, didn’t really like him as a character. The game didn’t paint him in a great light, and failed to show of how hard-hitting his story was. The gameplay, re-invented from previous games, was great. The Frontier made for one hellishly fun playground. Beyond that, the game’s story was let down by boring missions and some less than great writing.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (2010)

"No man can murder me!"

"Then I leave you in the hands of fate."

The second chapter of Ezio’s saga, Brotherhood saw the Assassin travel to Rome at the height of the Renaissance. On the whole, Brotherhood is a fairly average game. The setting is fun but the story doesn’t keep up the standards of the previous game. Brotherhood’s most notable additions to the series include the Crossbow and Multiplayer. Back when it was fun, anyway…

Assassin’s Creed (2007)

"I have seen what comes of those who raise themselves above others."

The original. Most people’s problem with the game is set-out. It’s missions are set out in a manner which doesn’t really make sense. Look past that, and it’s a great game. It’s ambitious, plays well and starts the series off on a good footing. While the graphics and gameplay don’t hold up to recent entries, look past that, and you’ll have a good time.

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (2015)

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are Jacob and Evie Frye. As of this moment, you all work for us!"

The series’ most recent entry saw us travel back to Victorian London, which coincidentally happens to be my favourite time period. It might just be me still in hype mode, but Syndicate was definitely what the series needed. It helped things get back on track by telling a great story that was fun at the same time. The graphics are brilliant and the two protagonists make for fun and likeable game time.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (2011)

“Join me, and show them what it means to cross the Assassins!”

Revelations is one of my all-time favourite games. The end of Ezio’s saga is a great story, and Ottoman Istanbul makes for a great setting. Revelations also tells the rest of the life of Altair, the first game’s hero. The links between the two make the game stronger, and allows it to show off even more. Revelations is also host of two of my favourite cutscenes in the series. The first: The ‘scheduled for deletion’ sequence where Subject 16 sacrifices himself to save Desmond. The second: The meeting between Ezio and Desmond at the end of the game.

Assassin’s Creed: 2

"It is a good life we lead, brother."

"The best. May it never change."

"And may it never change us."

The second, and best game in the series. Seeing the first game and raising it expanded and improved gameplay, AC2 takes us to Renaissance Italy to live the life of Ezio Auditore shortly after his family was killed. I will admit, the graphics do look terrible these days. That being said, the story is the strongest in the series and everything about the game is perfect. In my head, at least. It also has one of the two best game endings of all time. (The other being Halo 3) And that ending still confuses me. Needless to say, bad graphics or not, Assassin's Creed 2 is my favourite game ever made. Not being stubborn, but I doubt that will ever change.
