WHY PEOPLE SHOULD GIVE DC A CHANCE

With all the un-ending hatred Batman v Superman has been getting, I just wanted to remind you of something: Marvel didn’t get off to a stellar start either. Yes, the first Iron Man film was brilliant. There’s no denying that. But let’s look at the films that followed. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor. Films with good parts in them, but by no means great. Like Marvel back then, DC is just beginning its universe-building process when it comes to movies. It’s not yet at the stage where it can sell you any hero they picked out of the bag that week like Marvel can.
DC is still finding that all important footing on which to find it’s place. Personally, I really, really wanted Batman v Superman to do that. Clearly, in the minds of most, it didn’t. But looking forward, in the next two years alone, DC are bringing out Suicide Squad, which even Marvel fans have to admit looks great, Wonder Woman and the first Justice League movie. Is it risky bringing a team up movie out before all of the solo films? Yes, possibly it is. But at least they’re not doing endless bloody origin stories like Marvel insist on doing.
DC might not have the greatest track record when it comes to movies, but Marvel have made mistakes too. People just tend to overlook that because it’s had great films. So has DC, just not in it’s combined universe. DC are clearly going for a darker tone than Marvel, and I think that’s a good thing. After all, some of Marvel’s darker work, such as the new Daredevil and Jessica Jones series’ are some of the company’s best.
Look, I’m not trying to glorify Batman v Superman. I know it had things wrong with it, and I know a lot of people didn’t like it. But like I said, DC are just getting started. They’re yet to find that magical algorithm that makes their movies so likeable that Marvel have seemed to get their hands on.
This isn’t a post to get you to let Batman v Superman off the hook. By all means, judge it as you will. This for anyone who think that from here on all DC movies are going to suck because of it. They’re not. Sooner or later, DC will find their groove. In time, they will join Marvel in the sun. (Yes, that was me paraphrasing Man of Steel, which was pretty damn good by the way.)
Above everything else, just sit back, relax, and watch what you want to. Hero movies aren’t made to be Oscar winning, perfect master-pieces. They’re made so you can watch heroes beat the shit out of bad guys. Isn’t that what’s really important?
