THE FLASH SERIES 3: WANTS AND HOPES

Last week the second season of the Flash came to an end. Granted, the finale wasn’t as great as season 1’s, but I’m not surprised about that. The emotion behind the first finale is difficult to replicate. That being said, season 2’s finale did reveal a few things.

First, instead of killing him, Barry leaves Zoom in the heads of the demonic Time Wraiths, leading him to become the Black Flash/Black Racer, the living embodiment of Death within the Speedforce. Second, the Man in the Iron Mask was in fact, as many believed, myself included, the real Jay Garrick. What many didn’t see coming was that he was the Jay Garrick of Earth 3, and also that he was Henry Allen’s doppelganger. Lastly, at the end of the episode, we see Barry travel back to the night his Mother was murdered, and instead of standing back, save her, which in the comics had ever-so-slight massively giant, reality-changing consequences.

So yeah…

In case it wasn’t clear, everything from here on is just my personal hopes and wants for the next season. To find out what is actually going to happen, we’ll have to wait until September. With that in mind, here’s what I what to see in the next season:

A Different Kind of Villain

Don’t get me wrong, Reverse Flash and Zoom have both been great villains, but they’re both speedsters like The Flash. I want to see a villain who isn’t a speedster. Someone who either has no powers, or someone who has a different set of them. While I like the speed battles as much as the next fan, sometimes you need something new to keep things fresh.

Harrison Wells: The Original

By now, we’ve seen three versions of Harrison Wells. The one who was really the Reverse Flash in disguise, the Wells from Earth 2, and of course the original. While he was only seen through flash-backs in season 1, he seemed like a nice guy. With a changed reality and the fact I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that Tom Cavanagh is already confirmed to return, maybe we’ll get a more in-depth look at the original Harrison Wells.

A New Suit

While the addition of a white-backed emblem helped a lot to make The Flash’s suit more comic-accurate, it’s still not quite there. In the comics, it’s a typical superhero suit with lightning coming off of it. In the show, it’s a leather jacket on top of leather trousers. Maybe they could try a hybrid between the two to test things out?

Flashpoint, But With Some Twists

Flashpoint is one of DC’s best stories. It lead to the formation of the New 52 as The Flash woke up in a changed world thanks to his saving his Mother. Whilst it would be nice to see that story made into a show, it’s a known story, and has A LOT of characters. Scratch that, it’s got pretty much everyone from DC comics in it. The only way they could get anywhere near that on a TV show is a series-long crossover between Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. To make Flashpoint work, they’ll need to make some pretty drastic changes, and I’m ok with that. Surprises are always good, as long as they’re thought out. Focusing on The Flash in a changed Central City could work really well. Who knows, friends might even become enemies…

Less Villains of the Week

While the Villain of the Week structure is tried and tested, and introduces us to a range of characters, it’s not needed. If the show focused solely on the big bad, or a handful of well-developed villains, we’d get more fan favourites like Captain Cold. (Seen on the top left) A new Meta-Human each week might look cool, but it means more important characters lose out.

I’m sure there’s other stuff, but these where the one’s that seemed most important. Whatever happens, I’m sure Season 3 will continue to hold up the show’s high standards. That is, of course, if Steven Moffat doesn’t take over as head writer…
