E3 2016 HIGHLIGHTS

It’s that time of year again. As the next wave of video games and consoles are announced and shown off to the world, gamers are left squabbling over which company did it better. In no particular order except from what was easy to remember and what wasn’t, here are my highlights from this year’s E3 Expo…

Battlefield 1

Dice and EA’s most recent entry into the Battlefield franchise, Battlefield 1 takes the player back into World War 1. While the reveal trailer was nothing short of fantastic, E3 showcased gameplay from the game. Damn good looking gameplay too.

Halo Wars 2

I’ll admit, I’m still on the fence about this game. The trailer was released at E3, and to be honest, I didn't like it. While the beta is fun, it’s only multiplayer, but does retain the original Halo Wars’ fun gameplay. Having gone through the train wreck that was 343’s last Halo game, I’m very sceptical about how good Halo Wars 2 will be. Fun, I’m sure. But fun and good are two different things.

Xbox Play Anywhere

You’ll notice straight off that this isn’t a game. It’s Microsoft’s new initiative allowing Xbox games to be played on Windows 10 devices. It sounds like it could be very effective in finding gamers new ways to avoid the outside world at all costs.

Gears of War 4

A surprise highlight for me, seeing as I haven’t played any of the other games in the series. I don’t know much about 4’s story, but I do know it looks like a lot of fun.

Forza Horizon 3

Another surprise, I always preferred Need for Speed as a driving game. But, seeing as that seems to have ground to a halt over the past couple of years, it was nice to see the genre was still alive and kicking. Forza Horizon 3 not only looks superb, but allows players to race across Australia but also join their friends’ matches, instantly.

Sea of Thieves

I’ll be honest, until I watched E3 I had never heard of this game. That changed when the gameplay was shown, and I think everyone can agree it looks like a lot of fun.

God of War

I’ll be honest, I haven’t played any of the other games in this series. All I know about it is that the upcoming PS4 release looks damn good.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

It looked good at last year’s E3, and it’s still looking good now. I’m not sure how strong the story will be in the game, but the graphics look great and the gameplay looks very, very fun.

Detroit: Become Human

Detroit looks as if it’s a choice based game. It’s kinda hard to explain so I’ll let the gameplay do the talking.

PS: VR

Who doesn’t love the idea of playing games through virtual reality? Unfortunately for Xbox gamers like myself, it looks like Playstation beat Microsoft to the punch. They released footage from a number of VR based games, and they all looked pretty great.

Spider-Man

Annoyingly, I’m pretty sure this game is only coming out on PS4. That’s a shame, seeing as swinging through the streets of New York on next gen consoles looks like a lot of fun.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

It finished off Ubisoft’s conference last year, and kicked it off this time round. Whether you play solo or so-op, this game looks like a lot of fun, but also the kind of game that'll drive you crazy every time you make the smallest mistake...

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Simply because, with the help of VR, you get to control your own star-ship and explore the Star Trek universe. Hell Yeah.

For Honor

Vikings vs Samurai vs Knights. That description alone is enough to get gamers pumped. This looks epic, and the combat looks as brutal as it should do. And, just because the cinematic trailer was great too...

Told ya.

Steep

Finishing off Ubisoft’s conference this year was Steep. It’s not a combat game, it’s not a strategy game. It’s a game about snow sports and exploring the Alps. Usually, I probably wouldn’t give it much attention. Then, I saw the gameplay…

So, that's it. My highlights from this year's E3. On the whole, it was a pretty great line up from each separate conference. I don't know about you, but I can't wait to play some of these...
